Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
There are few websites out there that can not offer more profit if they receive more traffic. Search engine optimisation therefore should more often than not be an integral part of any long term traffic generating strategy. It is not as expensive as people often think and because of the way Google refines its algorithm, it is now more certain than ever that good rankings will be achieved. It is just a process of following a proven plan and continuing to do so for a sustained amount of time. The only variable should be how long it will take, not will it happen.
There are basically two sides to the search engine optimisation process. Firstly your website needs to be easy to understand from Google point of view. It should be easy for Google to navigate and easy for Google to put you into categories of what you offer. If you are a bricklayer in Melbourne, this should be obvious to Google. If you sell maternity clothes, Google needs to be able to see this. There are over one hundred things on your site that Google uses to work this out, so it needs to be done by well for maximum effect.
Following this there is link building. The more sites that are willing to send their visitors in your direction, the more Google trusts your site to be of referable quality. But it is more complicated than this. It is not just the number of links to your site, but the quality of where they come from. Are they from a source relevant to your business? Does that website receive many visitors? Does that site have a high page rank from Google? Is it a directory listing or is there an article about your business? All of these things will be important to where your website ranks. It is the time consuming and ongoing tedious part of SEO that is rewarded with top search engine rankings.
